Reading Aloud for Life
Favorite picture book of 2021.
The cover got me first. It reminds me of a little rabbit I keep in my t-shirt drawer. After reading THE BOY IN THE ORANGE CAPE, I had to give my misfit bunny an orange cape. This book made me so sad, I cried. And I was FULL of hope in the end! Every kid will understand. You will too. What a special read aloud book. |
I EAT POOP: A Dung Beetle Story
by Mark Pett Roaring Brook Press READ ALOUD GOLD!
My other favorite PB of 2021! WOW! All the feels….empathy, worry, disgust, fear, gagging, laughter, joy! And you will learn an unbelievable bunch of unforgettable bug facts, from the students at Dougie’s school. Get ready to read it again and again—noticing something new each time! |
How I love reading this aloud to people! MEET WILD BOARS (2005) is funny! And there’s so much to find in the illustrations. Everything from the boars’ names to their unnerving behavior (total lack of manners) will crack you up. But it’s also a great lesson in how not to be an awful house guest. So lots of room for discussion after the laughter.

THE ROCK FROM THE SKY
by Jon Klassen (2021) An odd book about friendship, with sparse text, minimalist illustrations, and suspense. Funny! It’s an unusually thick picture book but it can work for storytime and will interest a wide age range of readers and listeners. I think it would be a great cuddle-up read-aloud . . . even before bed. |
I DARE YOU NOT to YAWN
written by Hélène Boudreau illustrated by Serge Bloch Candlewick Press, 2013 I’m typing and yawning. Good grief! Beware!! A cautionary tale of the bedtime trouble just one yawn may cause. I dare you to read it aloud without yawning. |
WISHES
by Muon Thi Van art by Victo Ngai Wishes come from the heart. What if your heart is worried, scared, sad or hopeful? One child describes her Vietnamese family’s journey to a better life through—wishes. Take your time with this book and expect a lot of “why-s?” Read between the lines and deep into the pictures. My heart is better for reading this. I wish . . . |

ATTICUS CATICUS
by Sarah Maizes illustrated by Kara Kramer Candlewick Press 2021 As a singer and musician, I love the way words feel and sound. ATTICUS CATICUS is fun-icus, tongue-tickling, cat antics. It’s a rhymer with a twist of phrases, sounds and actions in between. A pleasure to read aloud-icus & ooo and aww-icus at all the pictures. It’s like word-dancing! |
